Mission and Ministry
Opportunities
Room at the Inn:
Room
at the Inn
has been one of First Presbyterian’s
ongoing ministries for over a
decade. Room at the Inn,
operated by the Sisters of Divine Providence, operates a daytime
homeless
shelter and provides housing and job counseling, but relies on churches
to
house people overnight. We are a part of
a group of about 50 churches that volunteer to serve as a sort of bed
and
breakfast for people that are homeless. On
the 2nd and 5th Saturday of each
month (or
about 18 times a year), we host up to 10 people here at church.
Nathaniel Hawthorne Elementary School
Partnership:
In 2001 First Presbyterian began working in partnership
with
Nathaniel Hawthorne Elementary. Volunteers from First Presbyterian
serve as
tutors to students, provide assistance to teachers and administrative
staff and
participate in school projects, among other things.
We have participated in Reading Days and
provided Teacher Appreciation Dinners in conjunction with teacher
in-service days.
At various points throughout the school year we provide books, school
supplies,
back packs, and winter wear that is otherwise difficult for many
families at
Nathaniel Hawthorne to get themselves.
Nathaniel
Hawthorne Elementary is one of three
elementary schools in the University
City School
District.
Member Visitation and Pastoral Care:
The Board of Deacons works
hard to keep member care and helping as one of its top priorities.
Hospital
stays or births are met with immediate visits, food, transportation,
etc.
One
Sunday afternoon a month members from First Presbyterian
divide into teams to visit those homebound
members, sharing flowers, food, song, or communion.
Children's Mission Project:
Each year, associated with the Easter Egg Hunt, the children
participate in a mission project. This year, we constructed care
packages for kids that are housed in emergency shelters. The
organization that we work with is Church World Service.
Mission Trips:
Members of First Presbyterian frequently participate in mission trips,
either in the U.S. or frequently to Latin America. The photos
below are from the July 2006 trip to Caruthersville, MO, cleaning up
after their April 2006 tornado.

Jane Horner
Fund:
A
gift of $500.00 was given by Mrs. Jane R.
Horner prior to her death in 1973, with the request that a Minister’s
Contingency Fund be established. Upon her death, memorial contributions
made in
her honor resulted in the creation to the Jane Horner Fund with the
goal of
increasing our church’s mission by giving financial assistance to
people in the
community. Over the years, the Jane
Horner Fund has continued this mission and is one of the few funds of
its
kind. The church often receives
referrals from other churches and agencies, including the victim
assistance
program at the University City Police Department. Most
of the assistance is for gas and
electric, but from time to time we also assist with food,
prescriptions,
transportation and housing. The Jane
Horner Fund provides assistance to around 100 families per year.
More Light Presbyterians:
The First Presbyterian
Church of St. Louis is a More Light Presbyterian congregation,
extending
welcome and witness to all God’s children in the St. Louis area, while
working for change in our community,
presbytery, and denomination as a whole. The More Light Presbyterian
mission
statement:
Following the
risen Christ, and seeking to make the
Church a true community of hospitality, the mission of More Light
Presbyterians
is to work for the full participation of lesbian, gay, bisexual and
transgender
people of faith in the life, ministry and witness of the Presbyterian
Church
(USA).
Latin
American Action Team:
Members of First Presbyterian are
active in the Latin American Action Team,
sponsored by the Presbytery of
Giddings-Lovejoy.
